Description

We are a 501c3, all volunteer, home foster-based dog and cat rescue with no facility. Our mission is to achieve a no-kill community by creating and implementing strategies that both Increase Outtake from the Shelter and Decrease Intake to the Shelter. To that end we offer both free and low cost spay/neuter, all pit bulls (and pit mixes) are altered free, a Pet Pantry that distributes over 2000lbs of free pet food to people through social services or that receive any kind of federal, state or county assistance, an Unchained Canines of Culpeper to build pens, provide shelter and dog food to previously chained dogs, and created a TNR Alliance which fosters a robust TNR program, and along with foster to adopt, barn cats placement and transfer to Mid-Atlantic no kill rescue groups we are a small but fierce group determined to reach our goal.

Adoption Process

We require applications submitted to undergo a series of approvals; once submitted, the vet reference provided is contacted (if no vet, 3 personal references are required, may be family and friends if they have a pet that you interact with), our Director of Adoptions schedules a phone interview with applicant. If approved, applicant is contacted by another Adoption Team member who does a home visit (now virtual). If approved, the foster parent contacts applicant to discuss the pet and arrange the logistics for a visit. Should both applicant and the foster parent agree it is a good match, you will be able to do same day adoption.

Not first come, first served, but the best possible match made. Our policy is that we always take our animals back should it prove to be a less than perfect match, or if you are unable or unwilling to care for the animal any longer. We just don't want the animal to go back into the system. It is also our policy NOT to adopt to families with intact dogs or cats (unless there is a medical reason for not doing so). This is an effort to educate and support our national spay/neuter efforts to reduce the unwanted pet population. We DO adopt to DC residents, parts of Maryland and Virginia. Occasionally we will adopt far from our epi-center, but will request your local humane society to do a home visit for us and act as our safety net. We do life-time follow ups and encourage adopters to be pro-active in sharing info with us. Upon adoption, the adopter is furnished with an adoption package that includes a contract and supporting medical paperwork on the pet. Cats' adoption fees are $125 and Dogs' adoption fees are $300 (Puppies' are $325).
