Description

GLWR is a foster based rescue organization and does not have a traditional physical kennel facility like many humane societies or animal shelters do. Our dogs are typically housed in family homes and cared for by their foster families until we find a forever home for them. Therefore, our process to meet dogs and to adopt may be different than a normal animal control facility, humane society or animal shelter.

All-volunteer group

Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue is an all-volunteer group and our mission is the rescue and placement of Weimaraners in the Great Lakes Region. We work with a network of shelters in several states, as well as owners needing to relinquish their dog. We are a determined group of people, but we couldn’t do anything without your support.

Dogs come first

We’ve stopped counting the hours of sleep lost with sick dogs and the miles driven to spring others from shelters. The volunteers of GLWR sacrifice daily to give each dog a chance to enjoy a good life. Your generous assistance with driving, gas cards, phone work, fundraising and dog care makes it possible for us to come to the aid of hundreds of dogs.

No-kill philosophy

GLWR adheres to a no-kill philosophy, and we will never euthanize a dog to make space for another. The waiting list for Weims in need never ends and we do all we can to take dogs in before they, well, cease to need us anymore. Occasionally a dog dies before we can take it in – haunting our dreams and fueling our determination to never lose another.

Happy, healthy dogs

From the moment a dog is part of GLWR, it’s medical and emotional needs are assessed and provided for. We believe in doing everything possible to help dogs make the transition into their “forever” home. Medical costs are our largest expense and your donations allow us to address health issues without delay.

Why we do it?

We are here for the Weimaraners and the Weimaraners alone. Our reward lies not in the accolades of being “rescuers”, but in the gratitude we see in the bright, loving eyes of dogs that once were sad, dejected and without hope. With your help, we’ve given them a chance to experience the warmth of a family that will love and care for them.

Adoption Process

Our adoption process is pretty intensive because we want to ensure a "forever match" between the dogs and their new owners.

In order to schedule a visit to meet GLWR dogs available for adoption you must apply to adopt, successfully complete the application process and have obtained an approval. There is no application fee required to apply. The application process consists of the following: written application, reference check, phone interview, and lastly a home environment verification; which may be either a physical home visit by a GLWR volunteer or possibly a digital tour of the home depending upon logistics and timing. The application process from start to finish can take approximately 5-10 days.

Once that process is complete a GLWR Adoption Coordinator will be assigned to work with you talk with you about our interests and to help you determine what available dogs we have in the rescue that may be a good fit for your family. Once a potential match is determined you will be connected to the foster family who will provide you with more personal detail about the particular dog and set up a time for you to come and visit with the dog in their home.

We understand that it seems like a long process to get through to just meet a dog, however, we want to ensure that dogs and families are a good match for each other and that the dog you are interested in is still available at the time you are approved to adopt. We also feel it important to have potential adopter’s screened adequately to ensure that we know who may be engaging with our volunteer’s and visiting our foster family’s homes. Their peace of mind and safety is of utmost importance to GLWR.

In order to visit a fostered Weimaraner, all members of the adopting family must travel to the location of the dog in order to give the dog the most comfortable environment to meet prospective adopters. This includes any current family animals as well. If things go well the adopters can take their new rescue weim home with them that day, after they sign the GLWR contract.

The contract is very comprehensive and states, among other things, that dogs must be kept in humane conditions and that if they are not a fit they must be surrendered back to the GLWR. Once a dog is in our rescue it is part of the GLWR family and we keep an active relationship with the adopters to ensure the best chance of success for both the dog and the family.

The adoption fee schedule is as follows:

$450 - Puppies/Dogs that are aged between 8 weeks through year 1

$400 - Dogs aged 2 years through year 3

$350 - Dogs aged 4 years through year 6

$300 - Dogs aged 7 years through year 9

$250 - Dogs aged 10 years and up
