We were started two years ago to try to decrease the cat overpopulation problem in our largely rural area of Plain City, Ohio. We do trap-neuter-return (TNR) of feral and stray cats. We also help low income people get their cats spayed/neutered. Out of these efforts, we always find cats/kittens that are friendly and so we do adopt out these animals. We have cage space at PetSmart, which does help us find a great many homes. Our area consists of a great number of farms and low income people who do not get their cats fixed. It is a huge problem that we are working to solve.

We are a non-profit shelter that accepts animals from our county. We have gone from a high kill shelter to a low kill within the last 3 years. We strive to rehome and train the animals that are brought to us. We are the only shelter in our town, only other alternative is the Dog Pound.

Paws and Whiskers is a not for profit Ohio Corporation chartered in October of 1996. The shelter, governed by a Board of Directors, is dedicated to providing a safe haven for our unwanted feline friends. While providing shelter, food, love, and veterinary care for the area’s homeless, unwanted, and orphaned felines, we work to find them safe, loving homes. We are no-kill and the area’s only feline exclusive shelter, assisting over 6700 cats and kittens in our first ten years. WE OPERATE ONLY ON YOUR DONATIONS! Upon arriving at the shelter, each cat is weighed, checked for any obvious injuries, treated for intestinal parasites, checked for fleas and given a flea treatment. They are then given food, water and a safe, warm place to sleep. Each resident receives a veterinary exam. Adults are blood tested for Feline Leukemia and Immunodeficiency Virus. Kittens are tested for Feline Leukemia only. Residents have their ears, eyes, and teeth checked, and are vaccinated for calici virus, panleukopenia, chlamydia, and feline rhinotracheitis. Any serious dental problems or other serious conditions are surgically corrected. We also attempt to have all animals older than four months of age spayed or neutered before they leave the shelter. The average amount spent on each resident during their stay is over $225.00 We provide 30 days of pet health insurance to assist with expenses should a cat become ill after adoption. If the cat becomes ill in the first ten days (as sometimes happens with the stress of a move), we cover the medical care (at our vet) during the insurance waiting period. We also offer a “cat-back” guarantee. A cat adopted from us need never be homeless again because we will take it back at anytime, for any reason.
