We are a very loving rescue that wants to help animals in need. We adopt animals in loving homes where the animals can experience being part of a family. Our goal is to give top quality care to each animal we help. We also want to educate the public by helping them to better understand why vaccines and Spay and Neuter are important.

The Humane Society of Harrison County is a non-profit organization, and a separate entity from the Harrison County Animal Control Center. It is our mission to rescue animals left at the Animal Control Center and prepare them for adoption within a loving and safe home. We are strictly a "no kill" facility. In other words, we keep our animals at our shelter until a good home is found. Destroying animals is not our solution to the overpopulation problem. For every animal that we place into a home, we rescue another from Animal Control. We make every effort to select the healthiest and most compatible friends for our clients. It is a difficult choice, but one that is necessary. It is our dream to be able to save and house all the animals before they are euthanized at the Animal Control Center. It may seem like an impossible mission, but it is our goal.

ARF was organized to rescue and transport pets from the county shelter in order to decrease euthanasia rates. Through the years, ARF has been able to help additional pets that the shelter either wouldn't accept or didn't have room to house. ARF does posting and transport for both organizations.

The mission of A Reason To Believe Animal Rescue is to rescue homeless or neglected domestic animals (including but not necessarily limited to dogs and cats), provide veterinary care, and get them placed them in great adoptive homes. All are spayed/neutered prior to adoption. We house these animals in foster homes, kennels, or boarding as needed. We work in collaboration with shelters, veterinarians, rescues, owners needing to rehome their pets, and the public. We work to reduce the animal overpopulation issue by spaying and neutering as part of our process. We work to ensure the safety of the public by vaccinating according to the law and as the health of the animal permits based on the recommendations of our veterinarian. We treat for parasites, injuries, dentals, skin or ear infections. etc. No, we cannot afford to pay your vet bill, but if you choose to surrender your sick or injured pet to us, we will fundraise to get it the care it needs.

The Jackson County Animal Shelter was established in 1985 and is the only animal shelter in the county. It is located on three acres adjacent to the County soccer complex on Audubon Lane in Gautier, MS, just off Highway 90. The shelter handles all animal control needs for all the county's municipalities. The shelter has the capacity to accommodate 154 medium-sized animals (cats and dogs), and four larger animals, such as goats and horses. Animal control officers work to serve the unincorporated sections of the county. The officers work during regular hours but are always on call, including nights, weekends and holidays to answer emergency calls, such as dog bites and reports of rabid animals. The shelter averages almost 100 pet adoptions a month. Unfortunately, for every animal adopted five new animals arrive at the shelter.

Paws Crossed Dog Rescue

We pull dogs from high-kill, rural shelters and place them in foster homes. Once they are vetted and spay/neuter (as needed) has happened, their information will be placed on our website to begin accepting adoption applications. We are a small group of animal rescuers & fosters who have a huge passion for saving shelter dogs. Personally, I've had 60 foster dogs in my home over the last 4 years and some of our potential volunteers have had even more in that same time period, all with a different rescue organization. I have a wonderful relationship with our local animal control facility and work closely with them to make sure dogs are placed in appropriate homes.

OPUNDO was established to assist HSRC in Beckley WV to move healthy, adoptable dogs and cats into rescues to avoid euthanasia. At the time, they were extremely high kill. As the shelter became more self-sufficient with this (new management, etc), we branched out to start doing adoptions ourselves. We pull animals from shelters and from the public to find homes and rescues. We also offer a monthly transport to a low cost spay neuter clinic for the general public, as well as transport for shelter animals to get to rescue on the weekends.
