Gateway Pet Guardians

5321 Manchester Avenue
Saint Louis
Missouri

Gateway Pet Guardians was founded in 2004 through the combined efforts of five extraordinary women with a passion for rescuing animals, but our story really begins about ten years earlier. One fateful day in 1995 while driving through East St. Louis, P.J. Hightower-an avid animal lover-took notice of the numerous stray dogs running through the streets. But instead of shaking her head in disappointment, muttering a, "If only I could." and simply continuing her journey like so many before her, P.J. did something about it. On that day and nearly every day thereafter - and every single consecutive day over the last ten years - P.J. has made the trip across the river from her home in St. Louis, bags of dog food in tow, and fed the dogs she saw on the streets. When she had the chance, she'd rescue them, take them to the vet, and try to find a good home for them all the while paying for it out of her own pocket. And so it continued for nine years. PJ and stray pitbull in east st louis 300x203 About Us Still on the street, this dog needs a foster home before he can be rescued. In 2004, four ladies who had become acquainted with and contributed to P.J. and her efforts, fellow animal lovers themselves, decided to form a fundraising organization to take donations that would help rescue many more stray dogs and cats from the horrors of street life as well as allow their own dollars stretch that much further, and Gateway Pet Guardians was born. Over the last six years the organization has blossomed into much more than its meager beginnings. With the help of volunteers and an administrator, we at Gateway Pet Guardians began raising enough money each year to begin filing a tax return. P.J. now goes through approximately 1,000 pounds of dog food per month and Gateway Pet Guardians currently rescues over 100 dogs and cats per year. We continue to evolve from a small organization to today's virtual animal shelter with expert management by our very first Executive Director and dozens of dedicated volunteers, an award winning documentary, and beyond to our future goal of building a physical animal shelter complete with a low cost spay/neuter clinic and education center in East St. Louis.

Homeward Animal Shelter

North Dakota

We are a small staff that has been working at our shelter, which was established in 1966. We rescue pound animals from local impounds when their "time is up" and bring them to our shelter to be re-homed. And we do this because we care deeply about the animals that end up in local pounds at no fault of their own, and would otherwise be euthanized if we didn't step in.

I've been involved in basset hound rescue since 2004. I fell in love with the breed after rescuing one from the shelter. Since 20O06 I've been extremely involved with two basset rescues. The area up here can definitely support more than one rescue.

Pet Res Q Inc. is a not for profit 501c3 organization dedicated to saving unwanted pets. Most of our rescues are "special needs" whether it being badly abused, older or handicapped. Without Pet Res Q Inc. euthanasia would be their destiny. This huge, loving task requires continual funding to offset the costly expenses of veterinary care, transportation, feeding and housing costs. Pet ResQ Inc. exists solely on donations and volunteer's efforts.

Leon County Humane Society

413 Timberlane Road
Tallahassee
Florida

(850) 224-9193
Our Mission To relieve animal suffering To prevent animal cruelty To eliminate overpopulation of animals To promote humane education To enhance the human/animal bond The Leon County Humane Society is Tallahassee's largest no kill, non-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to saving Tallahassee's homeless pets by educating our community about responsible pet ownership and reducing pet overpopulation through programs like Spay/Neuter, Rescue Ride, and Friends Fur Life. Because we are a no-kill organization, we are also a “limited intake” shelter. The Leon County Humane Society works closely with other animal welfare agencies in the community and transfers animals in from other shelters that euthanize for space, including the Tallahassee Leon Community Animal Services Center (City Shelter). We do not take animals in from the public. Once an animal is accepted in our foster and adoption program they are not euthanized for space reasons. Unless there are medical or behavioral issues that develop, deeming an animal un-adoptable, a cat or dog will stay in our adoption program until they find their forever home. Tallahassee is an APSCA Partnership Community, and LCHS is thrilled to be one of the organizations included in this innovative program. Over the next 3-5 years, the Partnership organizations and ASPCA will be working together to reduce the homeless pet population in Tallahassee and provide much needed resources for the pets in our area

1. Care for the animals in residence: We have purchased 13 acres in Callahan and made it our headquarters and forever home along with being a safe haven for the animals that pass through the RAIN organization. From this location, which is centrally located in Nassau County, we are able to service the entire county with ease. 2. Educational Program: RAIN experienced its third year of speaking to over 1100 fifth graders, with approval from the Nassau County School Board and several private area schools. This program includes basic pet care, hurricane procedures, wildlife, vet visits, adoption, Rabies protocol, and volunteerism. RAIN was joined this year with special guest speakers Nassau County Commissioner Mike Boyle and Dr. Jennifer Farrin from Fernandina Beach Animal Clinic. We will be expanding this program to other grades as funding becomes available. 3. RAIN Train Transport/Rescue Program: Transporting animals from Nassau County Animal Services (county animal control) along with many of the strays in our area, onto humane societies and SPCAs in the Southern United States that are in need of adoptable animals. Many of these receiving rescues are located in areas where strict spay/neuter laws and low-cost spay/neuter clinics exist. The current total of animals that has been passengers on the train for May 2009/April 2010 is 743. May 2010-present is 233 4. RAIN Food Chain Program: RAIN has teamed up with the Gleaners Food Distribution out of Jacksonville Florida, to help assist county residents through these tough economical times. Every Wednesday evening the Gleaners provide a hot meal to the community of Nassau from the Fairgrounds, and RAIN has committed to attending one Wednesday a month and pass out pet food to pet owners. This program reaches over 250 families in our area. 5. Operation RAINDROP: Assist in DROPPING the intake of unwanted animals and euthanasia in our community, through sterilization. RAIN utilizes the new First Coast No More Homeless Pets spay/neuter clinic located in Jacksonville, Florida. RAIN advertises/promotes the service, arranges appointments and transport animals to and from the clinic, for the residents of Nassau County, along with Camden and Glynn Counties of Georgia. RAIN also offers additional 24-48 hours of recovery at the RAIN recovery unit in Callahan at no cost. 347 animals have been sterilized since the program first launched in Aug. 2009. 6. Houses 4 Hounds: Providing dog houses to pets that have no shelter. RAIN has teamed up with the students of the Nassau County High School wood shops and Habitat for Humanity to build dog houses with the supplies RAIN will provide. Through this team effort, pets all over our county who live outdoors 24/7, will receive shelter from the elements and a place to call home. 7. RAIN has joined the team of Pedigree, Winn Dixie, and Tampa Bay Humane Society to help our troops in their time of need. Together with these two great companies, and one of our sister rescues, RAIN assist military people, who are being deployed out of the country for active duty, help find a foster parent for their pet. The RAIN Foster Coordinator is located in Nassau County, but has enlisted foster parents and applicants for the program throughout the entire United States. RAIN successfully matches pets with fosters until our service men and women return home to them safely. RAIN is proud and honored to have been bestowed this task in helping our country and the people who serve it. To become a foster parent, please go to fostermilitarypets.com or e-mail nassaurain@gmail.com We do it this job of animal rescue to help improve and save the lives of innocent animals. we are filling the 'missing link' for abandoned animals in our area. We are a small rural community surrounded by poverty-stricken towns, campgrounds, and reservations where many animals are not neutered/spayed, dumped, abandoned, and neglected. We rehab them, spay/neuter them, get veterinary care for them, socialize, and find forever homes for these great affectionate rescue pets.
