Paws From Afar is a 501 (c)3 foster-based non-profit organization serving New England that is dedicated to saving and finding homes for dogs that are in danger of abandonment, abuse or euthanasia. We actively work with rescue organizations in the southern United States to help transport and foster animals from areas where the euthanasia rate can hit almost 70 percent due to lack of space or funds. With your help, we can continue to rescue and care for these wonderful dogs. Each one is unique and we won't stop until we find them their perfect furever home.

We may be the new rescue in town, but we are not new to rescue. We are seasoned and we are committed. Established in late 2019, we have a core leadership and consulting team with decades of combined rescue, corporate, and dog behavior experience. We are in the business of second chances. In addition to being a resource for local dogs, Rescue Inc. homes the displaced and abandoned dogs from the rural south that would not have a chance at life otherwise. We also partner with organizations in MS + MA which enhance the human animal bond, and improve the wellbeing of an at-risk canine population. As a licensed and registered 501(c)(3) organization, we rely on your tax-deductible donations to support our rescue efforts. Every dollar is put to work supporting our mission to provide options for animals when there are none.

We are an all-volunteer, nonprofit cat rescue. We are aware that there are a large amount of stray and abandoned cats out in our service area and we do whatever we can to help them, either through trap-neuter-return-maintain (after spaying/neutering the cat, we have volunteers feed her every day and provide a shelter), or through foster care and adoption. We also try to provide information about the importance of spay/neuter as well as financial & behavioral support for people to help them keep their cats.

For the Love of a Dog is a small group dedicated to helping displaced animals in need. Relying solely upon the generosity, caring and hard work of a few wonderful volunteers we are able to place our pets in foster care where they are loved as one of the family, while receiving any necessary medical care and training. We take in just a small number of animals at a time to insure that each of them gets the care and attention that they need while waiting for their forever family. This also gives us the opportunity to get to know the animal on much more personal level allowing us to better assess their needs and to match them with the right family. An animal will stay with us as long as is necessary to find those right people and many do need some “work”, too many animals are dumped in our shelters due to behavioral and health issues that can so easily be resolved with just some time and patience. These are mainly the animals that we focus on the “cast away’s” that at no fault of their need our help because someone did not want or did not have the means to put forth the effort in caring for their specific needs.

Odie’s Place Animal Shelter was established by Brian and Kerrie Harrington and a close-knit group of animal welfare supporters in 2014. The rescue was named in honor of Otis, Brian and Kerrie's beloved shelter dog that passed away in January that same year. The ultimate goal is to build an amazing sanctuary for homeless animals, to give them a second chance at the life they deserve. Here is a personal message from Brian: "Have you ever thought about where stray dogs and cats go when they are caught? Have you ever considered the fates of runaways, or abandoned pets, if they are lucky enough for someone with a good heart to find them? Southcoast Massachusetts has thousands of stray dogs and cats roaming the streets, and many of them eventually find their way to shelters. My dog Otis was one such animal. We found him at a shelter and took him home. And in our home he was a friend, a confidante, and a part of the family. He passed away last January, and while he is gone his memory is not. The fact that Otis was able to be a part of our lives came down to luck as much as anything else. Nearly all of the shelters in our area have a kill policy; animals who are perfectly adoptable may end up being euthanized because they are old, or not socialized well, or have simply spent too long in an overcrowded shelter. But we want to ensure that Otis’s name, and the joy he brought to us, lives on. So we have established Odie’s Place, a no-kill shelter right here in New Bedford. We will do whatever it takes to make sure that every animal that comes in through our front doors leaves, one day, with its forever family. Southcoast Massachusetts sees thousands of animals enter shelters every month, and the majority of those shelters have kill policies. The simple tragic fact is that shelters are overcrowded, and perfectly healthy and well-behaved animals are being killed simply to make room for the incoming onslaught. Otis made life so much better for us, and we’re on a mission to give that same opportunity to others! Our sanctuary will have a no-kill policy, and we will provide temporary shelter until each stray or abandoned animal is adopted into its forever-family. No one will be killed off to make room!"
