My name is Kimy Smith. I am the owner and founder of Safe Haven Inc. I have love animals ever since I can remember. I fostered one dog that was severely neglected and got him ready for his forever home. Ever since then I have been helping other rescues with fostering until I opened my own.

I actually just took over Rascal's Rescue in January. The president had a baby and just did not want to do it anymore. I have been doing rescue work since 2014 when I began working at our local humane association. After leaving there, I continued my rescue work on an individual basis. I do this to better the lives of the animals.

We are a new, small rescue based in Charleston, WV. We have been approved for 501(c)(3) status by the IRS. Currently, our rescue is run by me, Cindy Limer, and Regina Cordell. We have bee friends for 40 years and decided to go legit with our efforts. Our goal is to save and assist stray, unwanted, or abandoned cats. West Virginia has a huge problem with overpopulation and we hope we can counter this with education and public outreach. We offer a full-service rescue and are growing quickly every day with donation and volunteers. I am a Registered Veterinary Technician, so we can cut down on some intake costs by performing some tests in-house.

about@appalachianpeacepaws.org
Appalachian Peace Paws Rescue is a small group of volunteers who work together to change the lives of every animal that we meet! We believe in educating the public on the importance of spay/neuter, TNR, handling special needs animals, and what to do when they find an orphaned animal. We do presentations to groups wanting to learn more, classes, and other venues. We believe in implementing a TNR program for community cats to reduce the number of homeless animals in shelters and the number of euthanasia's done by shelters. We believe in rescuing and rehabilitating animals to get them ready for adoption. Our animals come from owner surrenders, full kill shelters, abandoned on the streets, feral colonies, and neglectful situations.

Another organization, Operation Fancy Free, had been the sole organization benefiting cats in our county since 2013. Operation Fancy Free's primary mission was TNR, but they also had a rescue/foster/adopt program along with it. The decision was made in July of this year (2018) to close OFF's foster program and for the organization to refocus solely on TNR. Several OFF volunteers, including myself, were primarily involved with OFF's rescue/foster/adopt program and wanted to continue to provide a rescue/foster/adopt program for cats in our county. Although we know TNR is important, we have a passion for helping existing cats that have been the victims of abandonment, neglect, and abuse find a better life. As a result, we split from OFF, recruited a few friends, and founded our own organization to focus on that aspect of feline welfare in our county.
